Dear Jayhawks,

Like many of you, we were shocked and saddened to learn of this weekend’s tragedy in New York. We condemn the racially motivated shootings that occurred Saturday in Buffalo. We uplift those who lost their lives and those who were injured in this reprehensible attack, as well as their family members who must also endure this wrong.

As Jayhawks, we must continue our work together – as students, staff and faculty – to dismantle racist and anti-Semitic ideologies in order to prevent such horrific acts of violence and hate. We reject anti-Black racism, antisemitism and anti-immigrant sentiment in all forms.

We encourage each member of our Jayhawk community to support one another in this moment. Our vision through the Jayhawks Rising strategic plan is to infuse diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging in all aspects of campus life to strengthen KU as an exceptional learning community that lifts each member and advances society. Our Office of Diversity Equity, Inclusion and Belonging is working with campus leaders today to make sure support resources are available for all Jayhawks. If you are struggling with this weekend’s events or know someone who is, please visit our resources page to learn what help is available.

We are a richly diverse university. We encourage the Jayhawk community to commit to learning and to stand against systemic inequality and violence in any form. Our humanity is strengthened through our shared humility and respect for one another.

All Jayhawks rise when one stands for all.

Respectfully,

Barb and Nicole
