Designing the KU Core

In the first year of implementing Bold Aspirations, the foundation for the KU Core was built and policies for the University Core Curriculum Committee (UCCC) were established. In year two, we will design the curriculum by asking members of the KU community to nominate courses and educational experiences to become part of the KU Core. The UCCC, in conjunction with key constituents on campus, will ensure that the design, technological infrastructure, procedures, and training are in place to successfully launch the KU Core in Fall 2013.

For inclusion of a course or experience in the KU Core, the proposal process involves completing an on-line application specifying how the course or experience enables students to meet particular learning outcome(s). The department submits the application, associated school or college curriculum committee review it, and forwarded to the University Core Curriculum Committee to verify that the proposed course/experience meets the criteria associated with the learning outcome(s).

The application form can be found on the KU Core website and includes the following:

  • Contact information for a point person in the sponsoring department;
  • Information about the course or experience nominated for inclusion in the KU Core;
  • Justification for inclusion in the KU Core, including how the course or educational experience will meet the criteria of each Learning Outcome that it is proposed to fulfill; and
  • Plans for assessing student achievement of the learning outcomes.

KU Core courses and educational experiences will be reviewed periodically and considered for continued inclusion in the KU Core curriculum. To be re-approved, each course or educational experience will be expected to provide direct evidence that students have met the criteria of the learning outcome.
