Graduate students, staff, and faculty:

On October 17th I announced that Michael Roberts will step away from the role of dean of Graduate Studies at the end of this semester. Dean Roberts has made significant contributions to graduate education at KU and his leadership will be missed.

Over the past few weeks, I have worked closely with Vice Provosts Brown and Hamer and we have met with deans, the staff in graduate studies, leadership from graduate affairs in Student Senate, as well as with two groups of faculty from the executive council of graduate faculty as well as individuals nominated by each of the deans.

In these conversations, we have discussed ways that our current approach to graduate education at KU is working well. We also have discussed the importance of clarifying our University-wide goals in graduate education and the value of identifying best practices from our peer universities as we consider how best to support graduate students at KU.

Across meetings, there was agreement that the spring semester would be a good time to consider these topics more deeply and that it would be important to bring together multiple constituencies for these conversations in a working group, led by a faculty member who has demonstrated a commitment to graduate education. There also was consensus that we need to bring someone into the Office of Graduate Studies at the start of the spring semester to oversee and support the ongoing work of the staff.

To address both of these needs, it was agreed I should appoint an interim dean of Graduate Studies for the spring semester. As noted above, this individual will work closely with the staff in the Office of Graduate Studies to oversee the daily activities. Additionally, this individual will pull together a working group that will provide a report to me about how we can best support Graduate Studies and graduate students at KU.

At this point in time, I would like to solicit nominations for the position using our online feedback form. You may also use this link to provide any other feedback about graduate education at KU that you believe I should be aware of at this time. Please provide nominations and any other feedback through Wednesday, November 28th at 5 p.m.

Sincerely,

Carl Lejuez
Interim Provost & Executive Vice Chancellor
