KU Lawrence Faculty and Staff

Dear Colleague,

Our first university-wide Strategic Initiative Summit, "Sustaining the Planet, Powering the World," is Friday, November 18, beginning at 8:30 am at The Commons in Spooner Hall. On behalf of the planning committee and co-chairs Bob Honea with the Transportation Research Institute, Joane Nagel with the Department of Sociology, and Judy Wu with the Department of Physics & Astronomy, I encourage you to attend.

RSVP information is now available online. Space is limited, so please complete this registration form indicating if you will attend the full session, or if you are only able to attend the morning or afternoon session. Lunch will be provided, and registration is required if you will be joining us for lunch.

The summits are an opportunity to engage the university community in conversations about KU's research capacities, future directions, and points of collaboration related to this theme. There will be coffee and pastries available beginning at 8:30 am. Presentations will begin at 9:00 am and include brief talks by faculty members illustrating the multiple approaches to this complex topic and highlighting opportunities in the future. During lunch, deans from CLAS, Business, Engineering, Journalism, and Architecture, Design, and Planning will provide their perspectives as part of a panel discussion. In the afternoon, you will have the opportunity to share your views in small group discussions that will inform KU's plans to move research forward on this topic. A reception will close out the day beginning at 4:00 pm.

Additional information about our theme, "Sustaining the Planet, Powering the World," is available on our strategic plan site. I encourage you to particularly review a pair of documents in advance of the summit:

  1. An analysis of the Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats (SWOT) for KU in this research area.
  2. A list of funding sources that support research on sustainability and energy.

Again, please remember to visit the registration site and secure your space for our first Strategic Initiative Summit. We look forward to working with you on Friday, November 18.
