Dear colleagues,

As the academic year gets under way, I want to let you know about some policy modifications that have been approved recently.

  1. Smoking and tobacco use: We have updated the KU Lawrence policy on smoking to reflect a change in state law that was enacted during the 2010 legislative session and to limit the use of tobacco products such as snuff and chewing tobacco. The policy now prohibits smoking and the use of other tobacco products in campus buildings and within 20 feet of any part of any buildings, including overhangs, or within 20 feet of air intakes. Ash receptacles that formerly were near entrances will be relocated. See the policy at https://documents.ku.edu/policies/provost/Smoking.htm.
  2. Weapons policy: The 2010 Legislature also revised the wording of the “concealed carry” law. As a result, our policy has been revised to include specific language changes that reference the relevant Kansas statute. Also, information has been added about secure storage that the Office of Public Safety can make available to university departments that need to store university-owned weapons and to residents of university housing who wish to store hunting weapons. See https://documents.ku.edu/policies/provost/WeaponsPolicy.htm.
  3. Sidewalk chalking: This summer, a new section about sidewalk chalking was added to the existing policy on bulletin boards and posting. The policy permits chalking by registered student organizations and university units, specifies that only water-soluble sidewalk chalk can be used, and limits chalking to uncovered campus sidewalks (no covered areas, no vertical surfaces, etc.) We hope that this policy will reduce costs associated with cleaning surfaces that are not suitable for chalking. See https://documents.ku.edu/policies/provost/BulletinBoardsUseof.htm.
